The key to any successful alumni network is keeping your alumni community engaged.

While this is traditionally done through events, you might want to consider some virtual alumni engagement ideas. Many of your alumni probably already live their lives online and remotely, so they might not be interested in in-person events.

Virtual engagement ideas can help you to bring your alumni together, regardless of where they are based in the world. Best of all, virtual engagement ideas are often a lot easier to set up than in-person events.

To help you get started, here are ten of the best virtual alumni engagement ideas for your network.

[activecampaign form=5]

1. Alumni Quiz

You can facilitate a quiz online through a chat or a poll. This is easy to set up, and it’s also easy for your alumni to engage with – which makes it one of the best virtual alumni engagement ideas.

A good strategy is to run a nostalgic quiz about your institution. You can ask questions based on old pictures of events, your institution, faculty, and more. Alternatively, you can run quizzes about interesting facts about certain industries, or you can base them on current affairs.

2. Virtual Speaking Event

One of the most popular alumni engagement strategies is a speaking event. It’s possible to take these events and run them in an online format. This makes the event completely accessible to your virtual alumni network.

Try to find an interesting or inspiring speaker who will pull in a crowd. This speaker could be a successful or interesting member of your alumni. Or they could be an established public speaker, a celebrity, an accomplished business person, or anyone else who might entice your community to sign-up.

Ensure to include time for a live question and answer session to get your alumni actively participating. This creates more engagement and enjoyment from the virtual event.

3. Webinar Series

A webinar series is one of the best ongoing virtual alumni engagement ideas. Much like a speaking event, this involves finding guests for each webinar. However, these guests don’t necessarily have to be as “high profile” as your once-off speaking event. These guests can include your alumni, and/or anyone with a particular area of expertise or interest.

You can run these events weekly or monthly to help maintain consistent engagement. They’re easy to manage on a platform like Zoom, where attendees can join and contribute to the conversation virtually.

An effective webinar series should cover a wide range of topics. As long as these topics are valuable to your alumni network, you have a lot of freedom to choose different types of speakers and host different kinds of conversations.

4. Virtual Scavenger Hunt

Everyone loves a scavenger hunt. They’re fun, they require some brain power, and they’re an excellent team-building exercise. When it comes to virtual alumni engagement ideas, scavenger hunts are one of the best ways to bring your alumni together and get them interacting with each other.

There are plenty of virtual scavenger hunt websites out there – many of them free. This makes it easy to organize and run these events. You can even run these events as an ongoing series with a team leaderboard.

While speaking events and webinars are often one-sided, scavenger hunts are more conversational and engaging. This makes them an excellent social experience in a virtual setting.

5. Online Games

If scavenger hunts aren’t appealing to your alumni network, there are many online games that you could use for engagement events. This includes anything from drawing and picture games to Balderdash, general knowledge games, and more.

Games events are a fun way to get your disconnected alumni engaging with each other and with your organization. They require minimal effort to organize, and they can result in a far more active alumni network.

And while your alumni network plays these games, it provides an excellent opportunity for conversation and networking.

6. Mentorship Programs

Facilitating mentorship programs is one of the most valuable alumni engagement strategies. You can invite willing participants from your older and younger alumni networks to act as mentors and mentees.

Older alumni can share their knowledge and experience, which will add a great deal of value to younger alumni.

This can all be done online through virtual meetings. This makes mentorship programs an excellent way to keep your alumni engaged, add value and build a stronger community.

Many fresh graduates and young professionals are interested in joining mentorship programs. By facilitating a mentorship opportunity with your alumni, you can provide an excellent incentive for more people to join and engage with your alumni program.

7. Development Sessions

By introducing professional development sessions, you can run various development events, such as workshops and masterclasses taught by experienced and successful alumni. This will get fresh graduates and young alumni interested and active.

These kinds of development sessions can follow all kinds of themes, as long as they provide actionable takeaways to assist alumni with professional development.

You could run basic how-to short courses to expand on alumni’s knowledge, provide business strategies, and any other kind of development session that makes sense for your alumni.

8. Video Lessons

Virtual alumni engagement ideas don’t all have to be live and in real-time. One great tactic is to create video lessons that you can share with your alumni. Your institution can either create a series of lessons, or you can ask alumni to submit their own video lessons on certain topics.

These videos can be about any topic, as long as they are educational in some way. Giving your alumni exclusive access to these lessons is a great way to gain more engagement and inspire more people to join your alumni program.

9. Virtual Lunches

Virtual gatherings like breakfast or lunch should have some kind of purpose so that they’re not just a group of people eating at their screens. You could organize a workshop, a presentation, or an industry-specific networking event. Whatever the case, adding lunch to the occasion can be an excellent ice breaker.

10. Photo Contests

A fun way to engage alumni online is to run a regular photo contest. Ask your alumni to submit photos of your institution, their time on campus, special events, or more. You could also run a similar contest, where you ask alumni to caption a photo that you post.

This is a great way to get your alumni feeling nostalgic, and the content that your alumni share could bring about some great conversations and memories with other alumni.

Conclusion

Implementing new and innovative virtual alumni engagement ideas is always a good move in today’s digital world, especially when your community is spread out on a global scale.

Creating virtual events makes engagement more accessible for a greater portion of your alumni. This could help you boost overall engagement in a big way.

Of course, the best strategy is to combine traditional alumni engagement strategies with virtual alumni engagement ideas. This will help you offer a more comprehensive alumni engagement strategy that appeals to everyone.

What is Community Portal Software?

When institutions create strategic communities, these communities can take on different forms, such as student communities for universities, professional networks for companies, or even special information communities for business customers.

Whatever the case, these communities are where people can connect, engage with each other, and access relevant information.

Community portal software is what makes these communities possible. With the right community software solution in place, your members can join the community, connect with other online community members, and access your community content.

Online communities are created with a specific purpose, which is your institution. Within this, you could have various sub-communities. These could cover specific areas of interest or information that different members might be looking for. Your community portal provides a space for community members to search for these different topics that are of interest to them.

Community portal software is generally based around a member directory. This lists all members in the community and makes it easy for members to search for other people and make strategic connections.

6 Benenfits Of Community Portal Sotware

Creating an online community is vital for all kinds of institutions and organizations. However, the success of the community generally comes down to the community portal software used.

Here are some of the main benefits of using specialized community portal software. Use these benefits to help you understand what kind of software and features you should look out for when developing your community.

1. Create A Culture Of Digital Collaboration

Community portal software provides a digital space where people can share, collaborate, connect, and work together. By incorporating a community platform like this into your institution, you’re encouraging a collaborative culture share for people to interact in real-time.

This idea of collaboration can take many different forms and provide many unique benefits. Collaboration could include professional networking, it can enhance recruitment processes or could result in mentorships. Whatever the case, the main idea is that different people can discover the right connections, reach out to them, and be more enticed to stay engaged.

Community portal software with convenient member directories can assist with this idea of collaboration in a big way.

2. Gain A Deeper Understanding Of Your Community

Providing an online portal for your community offers a space to effectively communicate. This means that your institution can gain a great deal of valuable and authentic insights from your community through the platform.

For example, you could open up communities through discussion forums, send out questions/surveys to your members, or encourage social engagement within your community. This all creates a space where your community can share their thoughts and provide feedback – allowing you to learn from them.

Community portal software should be used to target a very specific community with a specific interest., You can use the software to create a broad community, but then you should try to refine this by creating subspaces for different communities to engage around different topics. This creates a different level of detailed information and insight into your members.

3. Share Important Information With Your Community

Online community portals are an excellent way to share information about your institution. This could be sharing details for potential new members, or sharing information to keep your current community engaged.

For example, an educational institution could use a community portal to share detailed information and advice about its curriculum. You could also share important information with students about things like their attendance, schedules, assignments, contact information, and more.

If you have more niche sub-communities within your broad community platform, you could share information that keeps these communities engaged. This could be anything that provides value to them, helping you grow this area of your community portal.

4. Create An Engaged Alumni Network

Whether you’re a university or an organization, you can use your community portal software to create and maintain a strong alumni network.

This is important as an alumni network offers many unique advantages. This includes factors like alumni fundraising or developing larger professional networks to help with rehires and recruitment.

This is where your community portal software comes in. The software should create a space where your institution can share information and engage with alumni. It should also allow your alumni to connect and engage with each other.

With a solution like Aluminate, organizations can create highly engaged alumni networks that help them achieve their goals.

5. Helps Members Make Strategic Connections

In order for your community portal software to add value to your institution, you need to make sure you use it to provide value to your members. One of the best ways to do this is to help your members create strategic connections.

With the right community portal software, you can facilitate networking within your community. Members can use the directory to find new connections and reach out to them. This can add loads of value to different types of communities.

For a professional community, this could be focused on professional network connections. For an education community, student members could connect with other students or even alumni. In both cases, the community could also be used to facilitate mentorship programs, which can add enormous value to your community members.

6. Design Your Community Your Way

Community portal software lets you create communities specially designed to achieve your institution’s goals. Instead of using social media platforms, dedicated community portal software lets you customize your community to match your exact needs.

For example, you can create groups and forums as you need them. You could gear your community towards customers, employees, students, or whoever else you want to engage. Do you need to add file-sharing options? Private Messaging? Add a membership directory? Set up, discussion boards? With an online portal, you can create a customizable portal to suit all your requirements.

This is important in order to achieve the specific community goals that you should establish before setting the community up.

Conclusion

Online communities are incredibly important for all kinds of institutions. They are places where members can engage, access important information, and create strategic connections and networks.

If your institution provides an online community that provides immense value, then you will be able to create a stronger connection with your audience and improve brand awareness.

This all starts by having the right online community portal software.

With a solution like Aluminate, organizations can create customized online communities to match their needs. This includes detailed membership directories, community engagement tools, and a user-friendly solution to community networking.

According to Mark Zuckerberg, global community building is built on the foundation of millions of smaller communities.  Global community building is enhanced by remote working and digital platforms that allow us to connect with the right people – regardless of where we are located.

If your institution is in the process of building up a community, in today’s world, there is nothing stopping you from spreading that community across borders.

Unlike local community building, developing and engaging a global community requires a unique strategy. Engaging an audience around the world requires a careful approach.

We’ve broken down eight of the most important factors to keep in mind for effective global community building. Follow these strategies to help you build a more extensive and engaged global community.

FREE GUIDE

The Financial Imperative for a Corporate Alumni Management Program

Your essential guide to leveraging value from your corporate alumni network.

1. Create Clear Goals

Communities rely on a clear structure and vision in order to facilitate success. With global community building, you have a far greater pool of possible members to attract. In order to engage with them effectively, you need to know exactly what the mission of your community is, and what you want members to get out of it.

Create a community vision statement and make sure it is simple to understand. Members should know exactly what they’re joining and why they’re joining it. This is essential for sustainable community building that attracts and retains the right people.

2. Optimize Your Digital Community for Collaboration

Global community building revolves around the online platform you use for your community. Without an inviting, user-friendly online space, you simply won’t be able to attract or maintain a solid global community. And when it comes to creating a strong global digital community, designing it for collaboration is paramount.

Your global community may not share a single common language, so it’s important to design the community for easy collaboration. This could include spaces for asking and answering questions or providing written materials that community members can translate.

This is especially important if you host meetings and live events. Being able to get users involved through additional resources (like videos or written materials) before the event could also increase engagement and make it easier for attendees that speak different languages to collaborate.

3. Make The Community Easily Accessible

Community building is all about providing an experience that is easily accessible to everyone. This is especially true when dealing with global communities.

Make sure that you use technology and solutions that everyone in the community can use. An effective strategy is to simply ask community members if they have any accessibility issues or preferences.

When planning a global conversation with your community, consider where people are joining from, what languages they speak, and how you can create a space where everyone feels virtually supported.

Some collaboration tools, like Zoom and Google hangouts, include features like closed captioning, transcript, and screen reader support.

4. Offer An Easy Directory

As mentioned, one of the critical aspects of running a global community is that members can easily connect with each other.

Offering a well-planned online directory is necessary to achieve this. The directory should clearly display the important information of each member to make it easy to connect with the right person.

The directory should also be categorized in a way that makes it easy for members to navigate and find people within the right niche or area of specialization.

Using a well-organized directory will make the most extensive global communities much easier to use. This plays an enormous role in effective community building and overall user experience.

5. Be Specific About Local Markets

A key part of community building is finding and attracting new members. If you’re sharing content and marketing materials to grow your global community, make sure your campaigns are specific to local markets.

Yes, your global community may share a common theme and interest, but the different members will relate better to localized content. Being specific about different markets, time zones, and their nuances will help you to make a greater global impact.

Carefully consider your target audience, what their preferences might be, and what kind of content will appeal to them. Try to find the right blend of global appeal and localization.

6. Create Sub Communities

One of the best community-building tactics is to make your community as specific as possible. Instead of only covering one broad community topic, try to break this down into various subtopics.

Chances are, people will join your community with the aim of finding a specific area of information and connecting with specific individuals within that area. By making it easy for them and creating that space, you’ll be able to attract more global members and improve engagement.

Doing this diversifies your global community, makes the community easier to navigate, and helps your members find the information they need more easily. If members are only interested in a specific area of information, they will be able to access and find this information whenever they need it, instead of scrolling through large amounts of unrelated information.

7. Add As Much Value As Possible

This is essential. If you want to focus on community building that works, then you need to make your community as valuable as possible. Attracting and retaining a global community can be tricky because community members have so many different options available. By far, the most important thing is to make sure your community offers members adequate value.

Some of the best ways to spread value to any global community involve sharing valuable content (like videos and articles), hosting events that facilitate facilitating networking and inviting a guest speaker who will attract a wide audience.

Another suggestion of how you could add value is to introduce a mentorship program.

8. Make It Easy To Connect

One of the most beneficial things about technology today is that it allows for easy remote, global connections.

Thus, your main focus should be on community building on a platform that facilitates easy connections and communications. The more options members have to connect, build relationships, chat with each other, and share content, the more engaged they will be.

Also focus on getting the global community involved, as opposed to a more one-way information flow. The more you embrace collaboration and community engagement, the more effectively you will be able to build a strong global community.

Conclusion

There are many approaches you can take when it comes to community building. By focusing on using the right community engagement platform and making this easily accessible to a global audience, you can easily develop a strong international community.

Physical separation shouldn’t stop communities from collaborating, connecting, and developing strong networks. These days, global communities are more prominent than ever before. With the right approach, building and maintaining highly engaged global communities is more accessible and realistic for institutions and individuals looking to network and form lasting bonds.

The Financial Imperative for a Corporate Alumni Management Program

Your essential guide to leveraging value from your corporate alumni network.

What Are Member Benefits?

Member benefits refer to the advantages members gain by joining an association, community, or organization.

If you want people to join your organization they need to get something in return, There are various perks, services, and special access that members of organizations could receive.

Any good membership network needs to provide benefits both ways. If the network is only set up to benefit the organization running it, then you will struggle to attract new members and keep them engaged.

Offering the right member benefits plays a major role in the success of your network.

Why Are Member Benefits Important?

Whatever kind of organization or network program, offering good member benefits provides three main advantages.

Attracts New Members

A good member benefits program acts as an incentive for new members to join your network. The more appealing the benefits are, the easier it will be to attract and grow your membership network.

Improves Engagement

By offering the right member benefits, it will be far easier to keep your current members engaged and interested in your network. Instead of just joining your network and forgetting about it, offering the right benefits maintains their interest and gets them actively engaged in the network.

Retains Members

Offering adequate benefits gives you a higher chance of retaining members. It increases the chances of members staying for longer and renewing their membership each year. Without sufficient member benefits, you’ll have a hard time keeping members interested in your network.

Six Member Benefit Ideas to Improve Your Network

While every organization and network differs, here are a few member benefit ideas that can help you improve engagement and attract new members.

1.  Offer an Online Member Community

Having a convenient online member community is the first and most essential benefit that your network should offer. Members shouldn’t have to wait for events to be able to connect with each other. Instead, they should have access to a dedicated member community platform where they can always network and interact.

Your online community platform should provide a space where members can return to find helpful resources, develop strategic connections, discover information on events, industry news, and more.

Having a valuable online community platform will provide a digital home for your community. This makes it easier for members to stay engaged, and it can help you boost member acquisition.

By providing a space for easily accessible virtual engagement, your network will become a lot more appealing.

2.  Offer Mentoring Programs

Beyond just expanding their networks, many members join organizations in the hopes of accessing a mentorship opportunity. This could be from the perspective of a mentor or a mentee.

A mentoring program is an excellent way to empower individuals and offer greater opportunities for professional growth. It’s an excellent way to attract new members and keep engagement levels high.

Set up an online mentoring program where mentors and mentees can connect and engage with each other. With the right community platform, members can find and connect with mentors based on their interests and expertise.

Professional development is a major membership benefit, and offering an easily accessible mentorship program is one of the best ways to achieve this.

3.  Offer Engaging Events

Events remain one of the most important member benefit ideas. Your organization should be using events to provide engaging, valuable experiences for your audience. These events can be both virtual and in-person.

Use events to educate your members, share valuable information with them, and let them engage with each other. Provide a resource library alongside virtual events, encourage Q&A sessions, discussion threads, and try to engage your audience before, during, and after the event.

By offering engaging community events, your members will have more interest in what the events offer. This provides them with more value and entices them to stay, and encourage others to join.

4.  Offer Member Directories

Directories can take on various forms and can be made accessible to members only.

Members can use directories to make it easier to find connections in their field and build relationships. This assists networking, outreach, and is an important member benefit to creating a more engaged community.

Members can browse your directory to find connections, speakers for their event, freelancers to collaborate with, potential new job candidates, guest contributors, and more. Having an easily accessible, searchable directory will save members a lot of time and effort, and make it far easier for them to grow their network.

5.  Members-Only Job Boards

Providing access to exclusive job boards and listings is an appealing member benefit for many professionals. You could make job listings available to the public, but only make applications available to members. This provides inspiration for new members to join.

Exclusive member job boards will help you attract more engaged, relevant professionals. Having active job boards is also a great way to attract a younger community, as they are more likely to be starting their careers, making a switch, etc.

6.  Share Valuable Member Content

A major reason why members join a community is to learn something new and develop their professional skills and knowledge. Using your network to share valuable member content is a great way to keep members more engaged and interested.

Member content can come in the form of newsletters, monthly or quarterly publications, regular videos, blog content, a podcast, or anything else that lets you share valuable information.

The more types of content you have to offer, the more you will be able to engage and interest your members. Use your online community to share this content, and create a space where you can facilitate discussion and engagement around this content.

Offering valuable content is an essential member benefit for any network.

Summary

There are many different member benefit ideas and strategies that you can use to attract and retain professionals. While these may differ between networks and organizations, the most important thing is that you add enough relevant value to your network.

The best way to achieve this is to use the right member platform. With a user-friendly and easily accessible online community, sharing member benefit ideas becomes much easier.

What is a professional association and why should your organization implement them?

Professional associations exist across most industries and areas. These associations offer various benefits to individual members as well as organizations. If you want to grow your business and stay on top of the latest industry developments, then a professional association is one of the best ways to achieve this.

In this guide, we’ll answer the question “what is a professional association?”, and explain why they are important for your organization.

Find out how Aluminate Community Builder can help you build your community.

What is a Professional Association?

A professional association is a group that consists of members who are all part of the same industry or career field. These associations provide valuable industry insights, news, learning, and networking opportunities for their members.

For example, a teacher may join an education-based association to stay up to date with the latest teaching trends and network with other teachers.

Popular professional organizations are often recognized nationally, and they can be useful for both professional members as well as employers and organizations that operate the association.

Different professional associations have different requirements. Some professional associations require members to pay a monthly or annual fee. Certain organizations also require a particular certification or degree for members to join.

Professional associations also differ in what they have to offer, and what kind of benefits their members will receive. This includes networking events, interesting content that the association shares, and any other industry-related opportunities and insights.

Most types of professions have a professional association or body, where members can learn more about their particular field. Some professional associations also have student membership options, where students in that field can gain useful industry insights and contacts.

Why is Belonging to a Professional Association Important?

Individuals join professional associations in their industry for various reasons. Here are some of the main benefits that members can gain from joining these associations.

Increased Job Opportunities

A professional association is often a great place to share and discover news about new job openings. Many associations regularly share information about companies in their field that are hiring for new positions.

Better Networking Possibilities

Professional associations are groups that consist of a large number of professionals, all within the same field of focus. These professionals are also generally based in a specific area. Gathering these groups together provides excellent networking opportunities for the association’s members.

Many professional associations host regular networking events for members to connect with people in the industry. This is a valuable way for members to make strategic connections and enhance their career opportunities.

Networking is an essential part of any professional association. It’s something that members look for when joining an association, and it’s something that organizations need to consider when creating associations.

Access to Industry News and Trends

Gathering together a large group of professionals in the same industry provides an excellent space to keep up to date with all industry news and trends. Professional associations bring together many industry experts to share news and updates in their field.

Whether you want to understand the latest technology developments, get to grips with new processes and practices, or hear about news straight from the source, professional associations provide the perfect space for this.

And these associations don’t just provide news updates. They also provide opportunities to discuss these news updates with relevant people and gain a deeper understanding of the happenings in the industry.

Creates a Better Image for Professionals

Another major reason why individuals join professional associations is to help them stand out to potential employers.

Being part of an association in their industry shows that a person has a real dedication and interest in what they do. It shows that they’re always willing to learn and grow in their field, which is a good sign for employers.

Ultimately, being part of a professional association provides a far greater opportunity to develop and grow in your field.

How Does a Professional Association Benefit Your Organization

Professional associations don’t only exist to serve individuals, they can also be incredibly valuable for your organization. Whether you want to build your own online community and start a professional association or join an association as an organization, there are various benefits that are on offer.

First of all, a professional association provides an excellent place to build up trust and a good reputation in your industry. It provides a space where you can share quality content and events with a relevant audience.

By adding value to your professional association, you’ll be able to build up a dedicated, engaged audience of professionals that trust your brand.

A professional association helps your organization stand out to professionals within your field. If you are able to use the association to position your organization as an industry leader, you’ll be in a much better position to attract top talent and get people talking about your company. This can help to spread brand awareness and gain a stronger reputation for your business.

Of course, there are also valuable networking opportunities that organizations can make use of. Networking remains one of the best ways for any organization to find new business opportunities and connect with new strategic partners and clients. Professional associations are one of the best ways to achieve this.

Professional associations can also assist the growth and development of your organization. Use these associations to continually learn from other professionals, access valuable peer support, learn about the latest trends and developments, and discover new growth opportunities.

Types Of Professional Associations

To fully understand the question “what is a professional association?”, you need to understand the different types of associations that exist.

Here is a breakdown of the four different types of professional associations.

1. Member-Benefit Professional Associations

These associations focus on sharing physical resources, conferences, and providing peer support to benefit individual members.

2. Designation-Granting Associations

Members that join these associations display a greater dedication to their field, and so members can gain certification for belonging to these associations.

Members of these associations need to earn and renew their certificates through processes like passing an exam, displaying their professional expertise, or completing certain professional learning hours.

3. Certifying Bodies

Members that join certifying bodies need to meet certain requirements, and then they are issued with credentials.

The main purpose of these associations is to issue and track certifications. Often, applicants can only join if they have a certain level of professional or educational experience.

4. Professional Regulatory Bodies

These associations are designed to establish and uphold the professional expectations of a certain industry. They often set up guidelines and best practices for professionals in their field to ensure they best serve the public. These associations can also establish certain licensing and certification requirements.

Conclusion

If you were wondering “what is a professional association?”, there are a few possible answers. There are different types of associations that exist, each offering different benefits and serving different purposes.

Joining a professional association is a valuable move for any organization or professional. It maximizes networking opportunities and alumni engagement, and helps develop a stronger reputation, and provides a space for learning and growing within your industry.

The right professional association can make a positive impact on your organization’s overall success.

The key to any member directory is creating an active community. Growing your member directory and keeping it engaged forms an important part of your organization’s growth strategy.

Your goal should be to add maximum member value if you want to attract and retain new members.

Different organizations offer all kinds of membership incentives and offers, so you need to make sure your member directory stands out in order for it to be successful.

In this guide, we’ll cover some of the best strategies you can use to draw new members into your community and keep them interested.

Find out how Aluminate Community Builder can help you build your community.

1. Use the Right Platform

The first and most important step to attracting and retaining members is to use the right community platform. Your member directory is a destination, and you need to make sure you provide a convenient space where community members can connect and interact.

Members should have immediate and easy access to the community through the platform. The platform you use should provide a single place where all resources, event information, and networking opportunities exist. A platform with engagement features will also help to keep your community active.

Nobody will be interested in joining your member directory if the platform you use is outdated and not user-friendly.

With a platform like Aluminati, you can create multiple targeted member networks focused on different areas of your community. The platform offers interactive chat messaging for easy community networking, and an interactive member directory to help your community connect with the right people.

Your community platform provides a digital home for all the resources and support that your community needs. As long as you use a platform that offers your members everything they require from the community, you will see a far greater rate of attracting and retaining members.

2. Understand What Your Members Are After

You can’t build a strong community if you don’t serve your members’ interests. Every resource, event, and piece of content you offer your community should be targeted towards their pain points, interests, and needs.

If you don’t put in the effort to understand what your members want to get out of the community, then you won’t be able to build a member directory that offers much value.

You can use data to understand general trends around what your community is interested in. See what areas spark the most conversation and what attracts the most engagement.

Send out surveys to your members and use your community platform to directly engage with your community.

The more you try to meet the needs of your community, the more they will be interested in spending time engaging with your platform and encourage others to do the same.

By offering relevant, valuable content, you will be able to build up a far more engaged community.

3. Start Small With Networks

There’s no need to go too big when putting together your networks, or forum sections. A good strategy is to start small and scale up as your community grows. This makes it easier to manage your community, and it becomes easier to add more value through your networks.

You might want to start with about 6 to 8 sections, and you can steadily add to this as the demand rises.

When you create these networks, don’t focus solely on business. Also, consider more casual conversations to focus on. These networks might make it easier for new members to join and start posting in.

Your aim should be to make conversation and engagement easy from the start, to help attract new members and get them interested in the community.

4. Offer Members-Only Job Boards

People need a reason to join your community, so offering something special like exclusive access to jobs is always a good idea. You could make job listings available to the public, but applications are only available to members. This could provide just enough inspiration for new members to join and engage with the community.

Your association should use its industry connections to offer appealing job listings. This creates a clear benefit to motivate more members to join.

Active job listings are an excellent way to attract and retain your professionals. The opportunity to find new opportunities and advance their careers is one of the main reasons why professionals join community networks.

5. Offer a Range of Virtual Events

Virtual events are incredibly important for community platforms. They are easily accessible for anyone around the globe, and they provide a space where members can learn and engage. By offering a lot of relevant and interesting events, you’ll be able to attract more members and generate more interest around your community.

Virtual events can take a few different forms. There are classic webinars, and also virtual conferences that are more engaging and welcome conversation.

This is achieved through things like discussion threads or Q&A sessions. Use your event platform to engage with users before, during, and after the event.

Your aim should be to add as much value as possible to your community through these events. Events shouldn’t just be a one-way flow of information. Instead, users should be able to find connections through the event, start discussions around the event, and so on.

Go back to understanding your members’ interests and needs, and ensure your virtual events meet these criteria. Events are one of the best ways to add value to your community, and they can be a major factor in why members join and stay connected.

6. Post Engaging Content Often

This is quite a straightforward idea, but it’s something that many communities don’t put enough effort into.

Your members find value in the content that your organization posts and they want to see this content frequently. Make sure that you post regular content that is relevant and interesting to your community.

Create varied, engaging content, and publish this often.

Think about how you can offer different forms of content and release this through different channels. Don’t only focus on an email newsletter, as this could quickly lower your engagement levels.

Vary the platforms that your content is presented on to keep your members interested. Your goal should be to make sure you send out exactly what your audience wants to see.

Finally, release this content often. A consistent flow of information will help you add sustained value to your community that helps your members stay interested in the community.

7. Offer Mentoring Programs

Another great way to add value to your community is through mentorship programs. Many people look towards community spaces to find mentors and improve their networking opportunities.

Offering an online mentoring program through your community allows mentors and mentees to connect with each other.

This is a great way to encourage networking and professional development through your membership platform to help you build a bigger, more engaged community.

Conclusion

As long as you use an effective platform and add enough relevant value, you’ll be able to build a strong member directory with an active community. With the right strategies, this is easy to achieve.

Make sure your members feel like they’re getting enough value and benefits from the community so that they stay active and your community continues to grow.

If you want to use these strategies to create an engaged member directory, then try out Aluminati to see just how much value the right platform can add.

Having a strong member directory is something that all organizations can benefit from. Whether it’s a public-facing directory or a members-only directory, this feature offers plenty of value to both your organization and your members.

You just have to make sure you develop a large enough directory to achieve this value.  One of the challenges that organizations face with their member directory is increasing the membership enough to maximize the benefits the directory offers.

In this guide, we’ll explore why a member directory can be so useful for your organization, and how you can increase your member directory for better results.

How a Member Directory Works

A member directory includes the necessary information that your organization stores about its members. The directory should include a search field, including a few filters to make it easier for the user to narrow down their search.

Each member listed in the directory includes a summary of who they are and why people might want to connect with them. The listing will either display the contact information of the member, or it will reveal the member’s profile page that offers more information.

A member directory generally offers the same common data:

  • The member’s name and possibly a link to their individual profile
  • The member’s contact information (email address)
  • The member’s social media handles
  • The member’s role in the organization and professional title
  • A photograph of the member
  • Where the member is located
  • Any other necessary information, such as their academic background

Member directories are accessible by the public, or by other members within that directory.

Organizations set these directories up to improve networking opportunities and make outreach far more accessible.

How to Increase Your Member Directory

A member directory offers many advantages for organizations. Organizations that use directories need to ensure they have enough members on board, otherwise, the limited directory will not add as much value.

Here are a few of the best ways to increase your member directory.

1. Use the Right Platform

Without a doubt, the most effective way to increase your member directory is to use a platform that attracts and retains a large number of people.

The right software makes it easier for members to join, and for users to search. If your member platform is clunky and outdated, you’ll struggle to attract participants.

So, what should a good membership platform include?

Look for software that offers seamless networking and interaction tools to help members create meaningful relationships. Beyond just being able to find contact information, some platforms offer interactive chat messaging.

This makes it easier for members to get in contact with each other, exchange advice, opportunities, and support.

The platform should also offer an excellent user experience. Profiles should be attractively displayed, easy to navigate and manage. The right platform should make it easy for members to find the exact person they’re looking for, access relevant information, and connect with them straight away.

Aluminati offers a modern, user-friendly membership platform that is ideal for any kind of organization. With Aluminati, members can access a broad membership directory that still maintains a personal touch. It’s the perfect place to build networks and enhance outreach.

2. Use a Directory That’s Easy to Scale

If you want to increase your member directory, you’ll need to use a platform that makes it easy to scale your members. Otherwise, you’ll end up needing to hire staff to manage memberships, which would be a major inconvenience.

The community platform you use should make it easy to scale up your membership base to a large number of users without requiring additional effort.

Not only this, but the platform should maintain a personal touch with each member no matter how large your membership grows.

Being able to manage your membership at scale while still offering total personalization, is necessary for growing a considerable, engaged member directory.

3. Utilize Your Current Members

Your current members are already actively involved in your directory, so why not use them to help you get more members?

Use your platform to send out a broadcast message to all of your current members, asking them to share information about your member directory. You could even incentivize them by offering a special referral reward for successfully bringing on new members.

People trust referrals and word-of-mouth marketing more than they trust businesses. This means that your current list of members is ideal for helping you increase your member directory.

4. Listen to Your Community

One of the best ways to grow your member directory is to make sure you’re offering the right thing.

Reach out to your current members and ask them for feedback. Ask your community about the kind of things they would like to see from your platform to help you develop a more attractive member directory.

Your platform could offer classes, events, programs, and anything else that serves your community. By sharing the right content and offering the right value, you’ll have more people interested in joining and becoming members.

5. Globalize Your Directory

The aim is to increase your member directory, so make sure your directory can spread out as far as possible. Use a platform that will help you build a global community. Your directory shouldn’t restrict members within certain areas.

Anyone using your directory should be able to interact and connect wherever they are. With a platform like Aluminati, creating a member directory with global relevance is easy.

Why Your Organization Needs a Member Directory

Whatever kind of organization you operate, having a member directory offers a range of benefits. Here are some of the reasons why online member directories matter:

  • They help to legitimize your organization by highlighting strong membership connections, showing long-standing members’ networks, and displaying achievements from your members.
  • Member directories make outreach and networking much easier. Whether from an outsider trying to find a contact for your organization, or other members wanting to connect with each other, a clear directory makes this effortless.

By facilitating easier networking, your organization can build more strategic networks and encourage collaboration.

  • Directories can act as a kind of communication hub, where all of your members’ information is stored. This helps your organization find the right people and stay in contact with them. A directory can be a very helpful component of your CRM.
  • Having an engaged community of members can help your organization in various ways. It could help you develop brand advocates, create a larger strategic network, attract more engagement around events, share important content, and more.

Conclusion

Never overlook the power of a member directory. With a strong enough community, you can use the directory to grow your organization and significantly improve the way it operates.

A useful directory can help you create a better impression for members, as well as provide a better experience for your website visitors.

By using Aluminati, any organization can create a powerful membership network. This platform can be used to manage memberships at scale, gain useful insights into your members, create long-term membership connections, increase membership revenue, and more.

This is the easiest and most effective tool to boost the way your member directory operates.

The Financial Imperative for a Corporate Alumni Management Program

Your essential guide to leveraging value from your corporate alumni network.

There’s no doubt that many of our daily business activities have shifted to online spaces. Statista reports that one in five business trade shows have moved online.

Statista also determined that the average business hosts between 20 and 30 virtual membership events annually.

Since remote working has become a daily part of our professional lives, there’s a lot to learn about virtual networking and how it can affect your membership platform.

In our complete guide, we’ll look at what a virtual networking platform is. We’ll also find out how you can use it to grow your work and membership communities, secure lucrative business contracts, and improve your brand’s exposure.

What Is A Virtual Networking Platform?

A virtual networking platform is a software that allows you to host an online event or activity that helps Employees connect and engage with their memberships.

In fact, you may have already used a virtual networking platform if you joined a virtual happy hour, watched a live-stream seminar, or had an online business meeting.

Using a virtual networking platform for enterprises can help employees connect, learn, and improve their professional network.

While virtual networking platforms can’t ever replace the intimacy of in-person meetings, they help employees connect from all over the world.

Today, virtual networking and memberships are growing as ever-more businesses turn to these innovative platforms to build successful partnerships and fantastic networking experiences.

What Are The Benefits Of Virtual Networking Platforms?

Virtual Networking Platforms can help drive innovation and entrepreneurialism. These effective tools also improve engagement with your business network and help professionals to make valuable connections that they would’ve otherwise never made.

Here are some of the benefits you can expect from using a virtual networking platform:

Quality Connections

Unlike traditional networking events, a virtual networking platform improves the quality of a professional’s connections. You won’t end up with just more members in your business network, but rather, connections that can add value.

The key is to create a carefully curated virtual network. It would be best to tailor the network to a specific industry, business or topic.

When your networking platform is laser-focused like this, it can attract a targeted audience. This targeted audience can provide your network members with valuable contacts, offering them a powerful virtual networking platform.

Easier Networking

Networking isn’t easy, no matter how many times you’ve done it. Extroverts and introverts alike can feel intimidated and self-conscious during traditional in-person networking events.

Luckily, a virtual networking platform can reduce social anxiety. Since everyone is in the same democratic space, it becomes easy to approach other community members.

There’s also a good chance that professionals can meet someone from another country. This valuable connection can help them launch a new business or secure a lucrative global deal.

Simplifying Logistics

Traditional networking is a logistical nightmare. From securing the venue to sourcing catering and guest speakers, there’s a lot that can go wrong.

In sharp contrast, a virtual networking platform reduces the number of logistics that community leaders have to deal with.

With fewer logistics to handle, community leaders can concentrate on providing an exceptional network that meets the members’ expectations and helps everyone connect, learn and thrive.

How To Use A Virtual Networking Platform (A Complete Guide)

Here are five essential steps to using an online network:

Step 1: Pick The Right Platform

When considering which virtual networking platform to use, consider your members’ experience.

The better the user experience is, the easier it’ll be for members to network, and engage with one another, instead of having to master complicated software.

For example, you need a platform that makes administration effortless. Aluminate For Enterprise, our alumni management platform for organisations comes with useful administrative functions that assist with registration and identity validation.

The faster and easier the registration process is, the better the user experience will be for your members.

You’ll also need some live chat features, Q&As, polls, or even videos to keep your professional network happily engaged and informed.

Finally, the right virtual networking platform should provide you with essential analytics, alumni engagement metrics, and data tools. You can use this insight to grow and improve your online network successfully.

Step 2: Brand Everything

Expect your network members to share your content and talk about their experiences with your virtual network.

To reap the most rewards from this, it’s essential to brand everything. From email invites to landing pages and videos, you’ll want every aspect of your platform to show off your branding.

Step 3: Add Members

When sending out invites to obtain new members, it is important to remember that the goal is to keep your network focussed on a specific industry or business.

The more focussed your network is, the more valuable it becomes. It will then be easier for professionals to find and connect with potential influencers and business partners.

Step 4: Create Events

Regular virtual events are a fantastic method to keep your professional network engaged and growing.

It’s far easier to plan virtual events than to prepare a traditional event such as a seminar, meetup, or trade show.

Here are some ideas for events:

Speed Networking

Like traditional speed networking, virtual speed networking is an easy way to get your community members engaged with one another. With this method, you provide your members with only 5 or 10 minutes to connect.

Virtual Coffee

A virtual coffee lounge is an ideal online space where prospective partners can meet and build professional relationships.

When your virtual networking platform makes it easy for members to meet and engage with one another in a friendly, accepting environment, it’ll quickly grow and thrive.

Cocktail Mixing Class

It doesn’t have to be alcohol-related, but an online class or seminar is a useful way to drive community engagement and encourage networking among your professional members.

Virtual events are straightforward to organize and create enough buzz to keep your community thriving.

Step 5: Keep The Ball Rolling

You will have to keep your community engaged if you want your online networking platform to thrive.

In this case, it would be best to rinse and repeat. Here are the final steps that you can take to ensure that you’re using your virtual networking platform correctly:

Keep your network members engaged

An engaged community is an active community that can drive networking to the next level.

Host frequent events

Frequent events are essential to improve networking. Here members can learn new skills, make new contacts and expand their business interests.

Know what your community wants

Send out surveys, polls or take the time to chat with your community members. Find out if there’s anything you can do to improve your recurring virtual networking platform.

When you have all of the tools at your disposal, you’ll see just how easy it is to use a virtual networking platform.

Choose The Best Virtual Networking Platform For Your Business
