Equally important to this, is the experience that your members have as being part of this community. This experience will validate whether this relationship is healthy.\u00a0 From there, it will influence their decision-making as to whether or not they increase or decrease their engagement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-12284\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aluminati.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Screenshot-2021-03-25-at-11.01.59-1024x604.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"669\" height=\"395\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aluminati.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Screenshot-2021-03-25-at-11.01.59-300x177.png 300w, https:\/\/www.aluminati.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Screenshot-2021-03-25-at-11.01.59-768x453.png 768w, https:\/\/www.aluminati.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Screenshot-2021-03-25-at-11.01.59-1024x604.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.aluminati.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Screenshot-2021-03-25-at-11.01.59.png 1298w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 669px) 100vw, 669px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>A Business-Centric View<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Inside-out thinking; Assumptions based; A one-way transaction<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lisa argued that whilst organisations are \u2018well intended\u2019 and they aspire to create a balanced \u2018mutual value exchange\u2019, the challenge is how they go about getting there and the potential compromises that may arise on this journey.\u00a0 Lisa cited the first step she takes with any organisation. Asking the company \u201cWho is this for and why do you want to do this?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What she often hears are stock responses like \u201cThat\u2019s a great question, we are still working on that\u201d or \u201cThe organisation needs&#8230;etc\u201d.\u00a0 What comes to their minds first and foremost are the needs of the organisation.\u00a0 This inside-out thinking is extremely common among businesses and institutions alike and Lisa argued that this thought process can also lead to the assumption that organisations know what is best for their members.\u00a0 In many cases, the needs and wants of the community members do not play a leading role.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large View<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Outside-in thinking; Based on empathy; Value exchanges in both directions; Members engaging for the value of the experiences.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In today\u2019s world, people have a great deal of choice on how to spend their time and who with, in an economy where experiences are valued more highly than possessions.\u00a0 Lisa argued that in this situation, a more human-centred, outside-in approach to thinking is beneficial.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With outside-in thinking, organisations are much less prone to assumptions and able to spend more time learning about their members\u2019 needs.\u00a0 With this information, organisations are able to make better-informed decisions and in turn, this builds a stronger foundation for what Lisa calls a \u2018mutual value exchange\u2019.\u00a0 By taking this view, organisations and institutions have a wonderful opportunity to make a transactional relationship into one that is much more transformational.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The experiences that come from this value exchange are much more meaningful for community members and that, Lisa argues, is the power of a human-centred approach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-12286\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>The Transformative Power of Empathy<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Empathy is core to the human-centred approach and in this context, Lisa argued that empathy is neither assumptive nor judgemental but the ability to share and understand the feelings of one another.\u00a0 This is achieved by putting aside any preconceived notions and understanding the thoughts and needs of others.\u00a0 In doing so, we open ourselves up to the possibilities of creating more meaningful connections with people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img approach there are opportunities to reframe an organisation\u2019s relationship with its community.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Reframing<\/b> <b>the<\/b> <b>Who<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who are the target members of a community?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are their needs, motivations and desires?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Reframing the Why<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why will members engage?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why will the community thrive?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why will business benefit?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Reframing the What<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What will members engage with and how do they experience it?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is feasible and viable for a business to deliver?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With this approach, the \u2018who\u2019 informs the \u2018why\u2019, and the \u2018who\u2019 and \u2018why\u2019 informs the \u2018what\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" Involved?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Reframe the <\/b><b><i>Who<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think about the complete possible range of members as individuals with different goals and needs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Identify a representative sample of these diverse individuals.\u00a0 Talk to them to discover their needs (instead of assuming you know what they need or want).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Empathise with your desired community members.\u00a0 Speak to them and make sense of what you heard. Dig deep to find the rich insight.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>Reframe the <\/b><b><i>Why<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Converge.\u00a0 Identify the continuum of members\u2019 needs.\u00a0 Identify the business benefits.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Informed by members needs, articulate the community vision, purpose and value propositions for members and all beneficiaries.\u00a0 Align it with the brand.\u00a0 Make it come alive.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Test and get feedback.\u00a0 Refine.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>Reframe the <\/b><b><i>What<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Invite a group of individuals who are part of your desired community to generate ideas as to how their diverse needs can be fulfilled.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sort through all the ideas and converge on the conceptual offerings people will want which are feasible and viable for the business.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Design and build each offering from the desired experience, testing and iterating as you release.\u00a0 Choreograph the end-to-end member experience to deliver the value propositions and exude the brand.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>\u201cA human-centred design approach matters especially when engagement and growth matter\u201d &#8211; Lisa G.
